A Boulder die is a 30mm oversized gemstone dice. This guide explains what makes it different from standard dice, who it's for, and when to choose a smaller size.
Quick answer
A Boulder die is a 30mm gemstone dice — roughly twice the diameter and eight times the volume of a standard 16mm RPG dice. It's designed for players who want a weighty, visually commanding roll or a display piece, not for those who need to fit many dice in a tight dice tray.
Why 30mm matters at the table
Standard polyhedral dice are 16mm. A Boulder die at 30mm isn't just bigger — it feels different. The extra weight and surface area make each roll slower and more deliberate. For D&D or other RPG sessions where every roll is a dramatic moment, that presence changes the feel of the game.
Trade-off: storage and portability
A single Boulder die takes up about as much space as six standard dice. If you carry a full set of polyhedral dice plus spares, a Boulder die may not fit in your regular dice bag. Consider a dedicated dice pouch or a larger tray if you plan to use one regularly.
Natural stone variation
Because Boulder dice are carved from natural gemstone, each die has unique color bands, inclusions, and translucency. That's part of the appeal — no two are identical. However, it also means the exact shade or pattern you see online may differ from the piece you receive. If uniformity across a set matters, look for a manufactured material instead.
How to decide if a Boulder die is right for you
- Choose a Boulder die if...: You want a single, oversized gemstone die that commands attention during critical rolls. It works as a d20 replacement or a ritual die for special moments. Pair it with standard 16mm dice for your other rolls.
- Skip the Boulder die if...: You need to roll multiple dice at once (e.g., for damage or advantage) or you have limited table space. A 30mm die can knock over miniatures and other dice. Stick with standard 16mm or 12mm dice for dense rolling.
- Consider the material trade-off: Gemstone dice are heavier and more fragile than resin or plastic. A drop onto a hard floor can chip a Boulder die. Use a soft dice tray or mat. If you play on stone or tile, a dice tray is strongly recommended.
