Compare plastic and silicone dice for RPGs. Warpips Plastic offers durability and quantity, while Warpips Silicone provides quiet, table-friendly rolling. Find your fit.
Quick answer
Choose plastic dice for durability and high piece count, or silicone dice for quiet, table-friendly rolling. Your decision hinges on whether you value versatility and quantity or reduced noise and surface protection.
Why material matters for your gaming table
The material of your dice affects not just feel and sound, but also how they interact with your table and fellow players. Plastic dice are the classic choice—lightweight, sturdy, and available in large sets. Silicone dice offer a modern alternative: soft, flexible, and significantly quieter when they hit the table.
Both materials serve the same core function—generating random results for your RPG—but they cater to different priorities. Understanding these differences helps you pick the set that enhances your specific play experience.
Trade-offs between plastic and silicone
Plastic dice are durable and easy to handle, making them ideal for repeated use across many sessions. They are also typically available in larger quantities, which is useful for games that require many dice at once. However, they produce a distinct clatter that some players find distracting or disruptive.
Silicone dice are soft and flexible, which means they roll more quietly and are less likely to scratch your table or damage other components. Their compact size (12mm) allows you to roll multiple pieces without crowding the play area. On the downside, silicone dice may not feel as substantial or roll as unpredictably as harder plastic dice.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Plastic dice (Warpips Plastic - Set of 36): Durable, lightweight, and versatile. The set of 36 pieces provides ample dice for most RPG sessions. They are easy to handle and built for repeated use. Best if you need a large quantity of dice that can handle frequent, active play without wear.
- Silicone dice (Warpips Silicone - Set of 10): Soft, flexible, and quiet. The 12mm size is compact, making them ideal for rolling multiple dice at once without taking up too much table space. They also protect surfaces from scratches. Best if you prioritize a quieter gaming experience and want to protect your table or other game components.
- Quantity vs. noise: Plastic gives you 36 dice for the same price as 10 silicone dice. Silicone offers a premium, quiet rolling experience but with fewer pieces per set. Consider how many dice you realistically need per session. For games that require many dice, plastic is more economical.
